2018 Guide Top 7 Lightweight Gis for Summer!

If the word “lightweight” got your attention, it was put in the title for a good reason. In the warmer months of the year, anything I can wear that is considered “lightweight” is going to get my attention. That’s because as far as I’m concerned if it’s lightweight, I’m going to be comfortable wearing whatever that garment happens to be. When that garment happens to be a lightweight gi, I’m very likely going to look forward to wearing it more often. I know, it’s a lot to do with logic. So, with that in mind, I would like to introduce you to the seven gis in the world of Gi Clothing that I think is the best for BJJ and are comfortable because they are lightweight.

HCK RS Lite Preview

Arriving at the end of June is the new RS LITE from Howard Combat Kimonos. This is a 100% cotton Rip Stop weave Jiu Jitsu uniform that is very light weight but steely strong. The pants are made of the same fabric as the jacket. The uniform is made of 420 gram 100% cotton woven in the rip stop pattern, unlike the typical rip stop weave that is a poly/cotton blend. The all cotton weave makes for a very breatheable and comfortable fabric, and a balanced strength within the fabric. Poly/cotton blends are not as breatheable and because polyester threads are stronger than cotton threads, there is an imbalance of strength to the fabric which can result in the fabric tearing under stress, such as pulling and tugging.

SubCulture Lightweights are a durable cotton that’s pretty lightweight.  This Red Dawn offers a REALLY nice red contrast stitchin that DOES NOT bleed.  This was an issue with other kimonos from brands like Keiko Raca in the past, but I can personally assure you that the colors will hold.  The gi dries really fast and is really light at 2.8lbs.  It’s 100% cotton, features ripstop pants (similar to Atama ripstop Mundial 9 pants) and has a rubberized lapel.
