Shoyoroll Buying Guide: Sizing, Drops, and What to Buy Instead

By Gi Reviews ✓ Updated July 2026
🛡️
Why trust us: we have been covering Shoyoroll since 2011 and maintain the most complete batch archive on the internet. We are not affiliated with Shoyoroll, which means we can tell you honestly when a gi is not worth the resale premium.

Shoyoroll occupies a strange place in jiu jitsu. It is a gi brand that behaves like a streetwear label: limited batches, announced drops, instant sellouts, and a resale market where the gi you missed costs double.

That creates three problems for buyers, and this guide covers all three: how the sizing actually works, how to get one, and what to buy when you inevitably miss the drop.

Quick Answers

  1. Sizing: SYR runs large by design. Their own advice is to size down for a fitted feel
  2. Getting one: drops are announced on their site and Instagram, and sell out in minutes
  3. Resale: expect to pay well over retail for sought after batches
  4. Missed the drop? Four gis you can buy today that scratch the same itch
  5. The archive: photos of every batch from 2008 onward

Shoyoroll Sizing: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong

Important if you are reading older guides: Shoyoroll no longer uses the A1, A2, A3 labelling that most brands and most older articles refer to. Current releases use plain numbers with letter suffixes, so an old "A2" recommendation does not map cleanly onto what you will see at checkout.

Size codeWhat it meansWho it suits
0, 1, 2, 3, 4Standard numbered sizingMost athletes. Runs larger than most brands
L (e.g. 1L)Long cutTaller athletes needing sleeve and leg length
F (e.g. 1F, 00F)Fitted cutLeaner builds wanting a trimmer silhouette
W (e.g. 0W, 2W, 3W)Women's cutFemale athletes. See our women's sizing guide
Straight from Shoyoroll: "Our kimonos fit a little bigger than most brands to help compensate for future shrinkage… Since our gis run a little bigger, we usually recommend that you go down a size if you like your gi to be on the fitted side." In other words, size down for a fitted feel, or follow the chart if you prefer it loose.

Official shrinkage figures. Shoyoroll estimate roughly 1 to 3 inches of shrinkage on white gis and 1 to 2 inches on black or blue, depending on how you wash and dry. Their kimonos ship pre shrunk, but cotton always moves. Read our washing and shrinking guide before the first wash.

✉️ Use their free sizing service. Shoyoroll will personally recommend a size if you email info@shoyoroll.com with your height, weight, and the brands and sizes you currently wear. Almost nobody does this, and it is the single best way to avoid a $260 mistake on a gi you cannot return for a different size once a batch sells out.
💬 The best sizing lesson from our readers: one reader at 6'1" and 155 to 165 lbs worked through three sizes before landing on the smallest of them, finding the sleeves hit the palm and the chest and waist sat clean. Tall and lean does not automatically mean size up with Shoyoroll, because the length is generous to begin with. It is the most repeated mistake in our comments.

How to Actually Get a Shoyoroll

Shoyoroll sells direct in limited batches. There is no restock, no back order, and no traditional retail distribution for most releases. If you want one at retail price, you need to be ready when the drop happens.

1

Watch the announcement channels

Drops are announced on shoyoroll.com and their Instagram, usually with a date and time but limited detail on quantities.

2

Have your size decided in advance

Popular sizes go first and you will not have time to deliberate. Work out your cut and size before the drop, not during it.

3

Set up your account and payment beforehand

Checkout speed decides who gets one. Saved details are the difference between a confirmation email and a sold out page.

4

Expect a wait, and check the ship date

Kimono releases are not always shipped immediately. Product pages carry an estimated ship date, often weeks out, and kimonos and special releases are excluded from the same day dispatch that applies to their general apparel. Factor that in if you are buying for a specific competition.

5

Watch for restricted releases

Shoyoroll has long run member and reserve access for certain batches, and parts of their store are still access controlled. Terms change, so check their current site rather than relying on what a forum post said years ago.

The Resale Market: What You Need to Know

Because batches are limited and rarely restocked, a secondary market exists on eBay, Grailed, and BJJ trading groups. For reference, current Shoyoroll kimonos sit around $260 at retail, while historic batches ranged from roughly $145 for the earliest releases to $300 or more for special editions and member exclusives. Sought after batches trade well above their original price.

⚠️ Buying secondhand? Three things to check. Counterfeits exist for popular batches. Confirm the batch number and label against a known reference (our batch archive is useful here), ask for photos of the internal label and patches rather than stock images, and remember that a gi that has been hot dried may be two sizes smaller than its label says. Ask when it was last measured, not just what size it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Shoyoroll gis so hard to buy?

Shoyoroll release in limited batches with no restocks, sold direct rather than through retailers. Demand consistently exceeds supply, so drops sell out quickly and unsold inventory does not sit around waiting for you.

What size Shoyoroll should I buy?

Shoyoroll's own guidance is that their kimonos run larger than most brands to allow for shrinkage, so they recommend sizing down if you like a fitted gi. Current sizing uses plain numbers (0 to 4) with L for long, F for fitted, and W for women's. If you are unsure, email info@shoyoroll.com with your height, weight, and current brands and they will recommend a size.

Are Shoyoroll gis worth the price?

At retail, they are a well made premium gi in line with other gis at that price point. At resale prices, you are paying for scarcity and design rather than performance. Whether that is worth it is a personal call, but you will not roll measurably better in one.

How do I spot a fake Shoyoroll?

Compare the batch against known photographs, check internal labels and patch quality closely, and be wary of stock images. Ask the seller for photos of the specific gi, including the interior label. Our batch archive is a useful reference for verification.
