Shoyoroll Rio Koi Release Information

by Brendan

Just in case you missed it the other day, Shoyoroll announced the release info for their next gi.

Batch 12: The Rio Koi

Disclosure: Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links and I will earn a commission if you purchase through those links (at no extra cost to you). These are all things that I have experience with that I am recommending because they are helpful and are companies that I have personally purchased from, not because of the commissions that I may earn from you using these products. If you have any questions about the links on this page, please email me!

It’s going to be released on August 27th, about a month after their last release.  I’m actually glad they split it up from the Ring.

It would’ve been quite a disaster if 2 gis were released that day.

In addition to covering the release, I’ll be writing up How to get a Shoyoroll Pre-Sale Guarenteed VERSION 2.0!  It’ll have a few updated tips and links in there that will really help everybody out.

Obviously, I made a huge mistakes in the last one and I want to make sure everybody gets one this time.

I fully plan on purchasing this. I’ve always wanted a gi with green on it. Not a big fan of white gi’s to train in because they stain so easily, but this will be a great tournament gi. I just purchased a uni-blue on ebay for a whopping $370 after shipping, but just sold my americana for $200 to make it a normal purchase. I’ll give you a review when you post yours.

I am thinking of trying to get the Roi Koi but I have a question about sizing: is it better to get a gi that is a little “short” or a little too “wide?” I’m 5’7″ but I only weigh about 120lbs. I usually get A1′s but I don’t want to be swimming in the gi. On the otherhand, having a gi that’s too small is also frustrating. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks!

You should get an A1. Shoyorolls shrink quite a bit. You could get the A1, hot wash top and pants after first use. Hang dry pants and throw top in the dryer to desired fit. Check frequently when putting shoyorolls in the dryer…with proper timing you could make your shoyoroll feel like a custom made suit. Improper timing could make it look like you are wearing your little brother’s gi.

Hey Steph, I’d definitely get an A1. SYR tends to be cut longer than other brands, so having a gi that’s a bit bigger is okay. If you need to shrink it a bit, check out the wash/shrink guide here (http://gireviews.net/wash-shrink-bjj-gi/). My advice is to always go bigger over smaller. You can always shrink it! =o)

Thank you both for the advice! Now, to see if I can actually get the gi…

After the Ring Pre Sale debacle and the recent dip in quality issues; I really question whether they’re worth it or not. I really like the Kimonos and the A2H fits me almost perfect. The problem is availability; are they making them exclusive or making them for re-sale on ebay? Because I will pay list price; but I am not going to pay over $300 USD for an average Kimono. Because that’s exactly what they’re becoming as of late. Companies like Control Industries, Inverted Gear, and Kingz, are making quality at a good price and very available. Thanks

Hey Richard, thanks for the comment!

I definitely agree. I’ve reviewed CTRL and Kingz and know a few folks with Inverted Gis and they all seem like great options. I hope with the one per customer limit that you’re able to get one if you want it!

Hey Brandon, Do you know what the symbol is on the bottom of the left pant leg? It was not on the original mock up.

It’s my Boba Fett helmet =o) It’s not on the actual gi, just a fun thing that I throw on a bunch of different images on the site. Sorry for the confusion!

You may want to change the time from 10:00am pst to 9:00am pst so there is no confusion.

“I want to make sure everybody gets one this time.”

This is impossible. Are you really this delusional?

Brendan August 24, 2012 at 2:43 am

Yes, Bob. Yes I am. I also want to cure cancer, end world hunger, and provide a meaningful life for as many people as possible. I think I should start with this, eh? =o) Baby steps….

Is it bothersome to anyone else that the Rio Koi goes on sale tomorrow for the masses to fight over and not a single shot of the entire Gi has been released?

I’ve seen a shot of the top of the Gi closed, but not the bottom of the Gi top or sleeve ends. I’ve seen the Koi shot up close. I’ve never even seen the pants.

That alone goes to show what type of amazing draw Shoyoroll has on customers. They really need to release full blown pictures of all the details in the future. It’s a shame they don’t.

And with that said. I think the only reason they don’t release the pics is because they know they can get away with it and either like a “mysterious aura” about their gis or don’t want people criticizing them before buy day.

I’m 5’9″ 160-165. I have heard the Rio Koi will run larger than the average gi. Do you think an A2 would be too large or would an A1L be more appropriate

Reply

Brendan August 27, 2012 at 2:04 am

All SYR run large. I think an A1L would be awesome, but an A2 would be safer as you can sell it easily if it does not fit.

Reply

Brendan August 27, 2012 at 11:41 am

A1L would be great Jonathan. I just wouldn’t suggest washing it on hot or drying it.

im 5’8″ 130lbs. Anyone know if i should get an A1 or A1L? was thinking a1L… but if its baggier than A1, maybe its not for me unless i shrink it (i would think A1 would get to short if shrunk). I guess the real question is, is the A1L baggier AND longer.. or just longer?

Reply

Brendan August 27, 2012 at 2:04 am

According to the sizing the A1L is just longer.

budo launched the rio koi a few minutes early and were sold out in most sizes by 9:01am pacific. luckily for me Shoyoroll didn’t sell out in my size (a1L) as fast and I leisurely entered my payment info with no problem. I will seriously consider a guma membership next year (depending on overall gis launched this year vs projections)

Brendan August 27, 2012 at 8:45 pm

And how good the GUMA package is next year. It was junky this year.

Sizing issues aside, I’ve heard very good things so far about quality. More to come!
