I must say I love this gi. Just got mine in and it’s lighter then my uniblue. But it’s not overly thin like the vulkin.

The A2 fits you at 6’1″ 200? Is that unshrunken?

Yeah. So hopefully this serves as a guide for others. The jacket is perfect right now. Cold washes and hang dry out of the sun for this gi!

That’s how I have been taken care of my A2’s since I first tried that size last October and it still fits…. You will never go back to an SYR A3 again!

And even if it shrinks a bit, I don’t care. I’m not a stickler for IBJJF regulations. 99% of people won’t compete in an IBJJF tournament and of the 1% who do, it’s maybe once or twice a year. So not every gi has to be legal. I’d rather get a gi that feels good and I enjoy training in. I enjoy a smaller gi much more than a larger gi!

Just opened mine up, overall aesthetic is great but really disappointed in some minor problems: singe/dirt mark on the sleeve, small spots of yellow (glue?) on jacket and pants, crooked stitching, very dirty/stained on the sublimated artwork on the inside of jacket and most noticeable of all is the sticker is misprinted which makes the gi look like a knockoff right out of the bag (I know its not but just a bad first impression). I love shoyoroll designs and have supported the brand for a while but this really leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I wonder if anyone else noticed any of these issues?

I just received my Rio Koi. I own 11 Shoyoroll A2 gi’s. I’m 5′ 10″ 155b lbs. I usually need to shrink them a bit too fit. I decided to go with the A1L on this version. I expected the length to be similar to the A2, but a little slimmer fit. Right out of the bag, the pants fit perfect. The jacket on the other hand, is unusually large. To the point where there is an obvious mistake. It’s easily much larger than my A2’s, and probably in the A3 range. As far as the design goes, I am very impressed. I bought one for my wife as well, and she loves it. I e-mailed Shoyoroll about the problem, and will be very curious as to their customer service.

Charlie, can you take a few measurements for me on your a1L? How long is the top of the sleeve from lapel to the cuff? How long is it from the armpit to the bottom of the skirt?

    Reply
      Charlie says September 2, 2012

Brendan, The measurements you asked for are as follows. Sleeve to lapel (34″). Cuff to cuff (73.5″). Armpit to bottom of skirt (22″). The sleeves are the real issue, although the entire jacket is just big. The A2 comp lite I just received is 9″ shorter from cuff to cuff after 1 wash. I’ll be very interested in seeing how Shoyoroll handles this. I e-mailed them prior to e-mailing you, and haven’t received a response.

I haven’t received an e-mail back yet. I measured a brand new A2 Compadre I own but haven’t used. Cuff to cuff was 67″. The A1L is 6.5″ longer. You’re right. Insane. I’m calling tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted. I’ll be honest, not hearing back has really made me think twice about Shoyoroll.

Charlie, was that a cold wash and line dry? So if I am on the top end of an A2 should I go A3?

i got an a1L too (my third), they start quite large and I usually cold wash and dry in 3-5 min increments for almost half a dryer cycle to shrink to fit, hope helps

    C says September 2, 2012

wow, you must be shrinking like crazy to make it fit you. I think the length is probably perfect for you, but in girth I think it may be a bit baggy? I’m 5’6″ 185 lbs. The girth of the A2 top and pants fit great, but they tend to be a bit long for me, therefore me having to shrink a few times. It’s hard to figure out what cut they use. As the A2 Count fit better for me than the A2 Compadre. Hmmm….

    Reply
      Brendan says September 4, 2012

seems cut has been all over the place on the past few batches. but the a2 still seems to be what most a3 gis are in other brands

I got my Rio Koi in the mail today, and the gi is seriously ill… and it’s my first SYR, which I got based off of your pro ordering tips.

I think I made the classic mistake of ordering my regular size instead of a size down (bought an A1, should’ve got an A0).

I’m trying to get it to fit like my MKM (A1), but the SYR needs to shrink in the pants 2.5″. In the sleeves (wrist to collar) it needs to shrink a solid 3″.

Would I be better suited looking for an A0 or shrinking the A1 a lot? I’m about 5’9″ 140 lbs.

Thanks in advance, and how do we support gireviews.net other than likes and newsletter signups?

    Brendan says September 5, 2012

Thanks so much for the comment Bryan. Glad the tips were helpful. I think you’d probably be more suited to an A1. I think most people need to order a size down or order the long/slim sizes when ordering a SYR.

We have some patches coming out soon, as well as a free ebook (for everybody on the mailing list), and we’ll be starting the podcast.

Also, I have a really crazy secret project in the works that I’ve only hinted at on Instagram (follow at ‘gireviewsdotnet’) that I would love support for when the time comes! Thanks again Bryan!

I was lucky enough to get a second rio koi A2 when budo sold them after the Brasilio sold. I got it just to trade it with someone for a 7th son, golden state, mamba or yank A2 if anybody is interested. Doesn’t have to be new as long as it’s not torn to hell, not dried, and not super patched up. If anyone is interested just reply to this and shoot me a picture of it and we can exchange info. Possibly a Ring as well because I want some purple when I get my purple belt in the future

i weigh around 5’7 185 lbs, should i go for an A1 or A2?

Reply
    Brendan says September 5, 2012

I would definitely say an A1 JC. I wear an A2 in SYR and I’m 6’1″ and 200. Since I am at the absolutely top end of the A2, I would say maybe an A2 and then some serious shrinking may be in order.

I have a new gold weave atama and it’s baggy in the body but the sleeves are too short and it’s an A3. It’s the softest gi I’ve ever owned.

Everyone is talking about size and fit. Well I trained in mine today so I’ll give my opinions on the heart and sole of the gi GRAPPLING. Super light yet has a nice collar unlike a vulkin pro light. Pants were super thin too. Perfect summer/hot weather gi or tournament gi. Pants were so thin that just after warmup drills you could see the sweat through them. The jacket was super comfortable and breathable. Though I have two and was considering trading it, I think I’ll keep it incase the lightness causes it to not be durable. Definitely went to the top of my list of favorite gi I own. Great job shoyoroll!

Thanks for the thought Ryan! What gi are you looking to get next?

    Reply
      Ryan says September 7, 2012

It’s really hard for me to venture away from shoyoroll because my tall lanky body makes it hard to find good fitting gi’s. The shoyoroll A2 is best out of the bag fitting gi to me. And they come out with so many different styles and weaves that you can get a lot of them and not feel like having all the same gi’s. So my next will probably be a ebay purchased ring or gold star (or probably both and the charles lew if they don’t come out at the same time).

May I suggest the Bamboo Gi from Lucky… I have the white and green one I believe it’s called the Fluer De Lis. Just like SYR A2’s it fits right out of the bag! It is the most comfortable Gi I own and I own just about every SYR Gi that has come out this year. I hope the bamboo Gi’s are still available…. I myself would like another…

I actually have two Lucky Bamboo gis. I bought two because I liked how it fit and felt but I didn’t think it would last very long. I have been using it every day except the weekends for 9 months now and it shows NO sign of wear besides the printed logos on the inside of the jacket are getting a little lighter (fading slightly over 9 months). No problems. — But I have a spare A2 in the bag un opened. Does anyone know what they are worth because the guys at Lucky said there will be NO more Bamboo material gis and A2 was the first to sell out. Anyone know what it’s worth? I don’t need two because the one I use is holding up fine. Thanks

Hey Brendan,

I’m looking at forking over way too much for a Ring and want to ask your opinion on sizing. I’m in between an a2 and a3s at 6’2” and 170 lbs. I’ve got long monkey arms but don’t a gi that swallows my torso and pants that are way baggy for my skinny frame. Do you have a cuff to cuff measurement for the a2? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

    Brendan says October 14, 2012

an a3 is going to massive on your midsection. my a3 americana cuff to cuff is 72″ unwashed (my ring is a bit less as I tried to shrink it down a bit) and my a2 rio koi unwashed is 69″ cuff to cuff. Thanks for the comment, John and I hope that helps a bit! If you’re looking to still buy an A3 ring, definitely shoot me an email 🙂
